The 10 Kind Club members met with the mentor every week on Mondays for one hour. On weeks where Monday fell on a holiday, we met on Wednesdays. We met in different rooms depending on what we were working on. We met on a couple of occasions to watch and participate in Girls Build LA webinars. We met in the Principal's Conference Room for those. We met in one of our empty classrooms for our Girls Build LA Retreat in which we did team building activities, assigned roles and responsibilities, created our social media accounts and website, and created a timeline for ourselves. We continued to meet every week to look into research and discuss it with our team members. We used the time to take notes on all of the statistics and research that we found. We then came up with a project plan for what we wanted to do to reach out to the community. Once we decided to go out to the elementary schools and conduct an assembly for the students, we used our meeting times to plan what information we wanted to share with them, how we wanted to make the information age appropriate and what activities we wanted to conduct with the students given space and attention span of elementary school students.
Since we were researching so much on coping skills and mental health, self care kept coming up. So we thought it would be a neat idea to have a Self Care day around Valentine's Day. We worked on what we wanted it to look like and went around to our teachers at the school to solicit support. We had such an amazing turnout for the event. Teachers, staff, and students did each other's nails and hair and even made nice Care Cards. In these cards, they wrote how much they appreciated someone. We took some time to add these pictures on our social media site.
After our event at our school, we then met in the library on a couple of Mondays to discuss what we wanted our PowerPoint Presentation to look like. We divided topics among each team member and each member was responsible for their slide. We then began meeting in the Computer Lab and worked on our presentation on Google Slides. It was great because we were able to work simultaneously on the same presentation and watch it come together.
Once we finished our presentation, we began cutting and folding our Coping Tellers for the students. We needed to make 800 tellers to make sure that every student would receive one. We bought the beach balls and labeled all of the emotions and prepared all of our supplies for our field trip.
We presented our main presentation for our project to our 6th graders on Tuesday, April 17. We visited four elementary schools on Wednesday, April 18 and three elementary schools on Thursday, April 19 to make our presentations. Once we were finished with these trips, we met on the next two Mondays to go through our videos, update our social media sites and work on finishing our website. We met during our elective classes to film our video.
