For our project, over a course of 3 days, we held a total of 8 events. One at our own Sutter Middle School, and seven elementary schools. We reached a total of 765 students and about 25 staff members. The grade levels reached were:
We collected interviews and letters from students as our evidence. We used interviews to measure how much information was retained, and how the students and teachers felt about the topic, activities held, and information. We also had a Question and Answer portion at the end of the presentation to measure how much information was retained.
We feel that our project was impactful to the students because we observed students engaged in the activities, they answered questions about what they learned and they gave positive reviews in interviews. We received thank you letters from students sharing appreciation for having us out at their school and stating what they learned. We received responses like, “thank you for the breathing lessons because I think that will really help us when we’re sad or very mad”, another student said, and “I learned a lot of things about depression, anxiety, emotions, kindness and other people’s feelings.
When asked what they learned from the presentation during our interviews, these were some of results:
-"You should stay calm and you have a lot of different emotions and its okay to express them and you should have a strong mind and body". (Kimberly, Hart St Elementary)
-"You can do many things to calm down when you are sad or angry. My favorite activity was when we tooth a deep breath for three seconds". (Emiliano, Hart St Elementary)
-"I learned that I can use reading, listening to music and watching funny videos as coping skills". (Emily, Reseda Elementary)
-"I learned a bunch of coping skills and how to deal with your emotions" (Emily M, Limerick Elementary)
-"I learned ways to cope when I feel angry, sad and nervous" (Alyssa, Anatola Elementary)
-"I learned that it is okay to express your feelings. I learned that there are 27 emotions.I also learned the breathing exercise to breath in for 3 seconds, hold it for 3 seconds and breath out for 3 seconds" (Jerry, Sunny Brae Elementary)
-I learned that when I am feeling sad or mad or nervous I can use coping skills to feel better. The coping skills that I could do are dance, do art and watch movies" (Sophia, Melvin Elementary)
